HISTORY

THE INCEPTION

The Lala Lajpatrai Memorial Trust was registered on 13th July 1959. The trustees got a land on lease from the government. A seven story building was erected on the land. On 10th February 1972 the trust leased the college building to Lala Lajpatrai Institute for education purpose. The aim of the Trust was to establish, conduct, control and manage school, institutes, academics and colleges for promoting education in all departments by ways and modes best suited to the needs of the people. Its aim was to promote cultural, literal and social welfare of the people. The Institute established a library and built up a large collection of books, periodicals and journals. The main aim of the Institute was to take an active interest in the social and moral welfare of the community.

The Institute started Lala Lajpatrai College of Commerce and Economics in the academic year 1972-73. The College was named after the great freedom fighter and Lion of Punjab Shri. Lala Lajpatraiji.

GROWTH

The College flourished for the next 50 years of its existence. The Institute continued to add more courses. In 2001-2002 the College started post-graduation course. Masters in Commerce in two subjects namely Business Management and Advanced Accountancy commenced. The undergraduate self-financing courses were started in the academic year 1999 onwards. These courses included the very popular B.M.S, B.B.I, B.A.F, B.SC.IT, B.M.M and B.FMg. In 1995 Lala Lajpatrai Institute of Management was started to meet the growing demand of management education. In 2005 Lala Lajpatrai College of Law was started by the institute to offer the LLB degree. In 2015 the college began Research Center in the subject of Commerce and Trade, Transport and Industry. On 14th November 2007 the College received Punjabi Linguistic Minority Status.

CURRENT SCENARIO

The College continued to grow under the dynamic leadership of the chairman of the Trust Dr. Kamalji Gupta and the Trustee Dr. Sunilji Gupta. A number of certificate courses were added in the last five years. Due to the growing demand of the courses divisions of exiting courses were increased. Yet another feather in the cap of the college was an international MOU with Dukraj Pandit University, Bangkok. The students German Exchange Program along with Rotary club is another important mile stone. The College students went on a number of national and international study tours to get industry exposure. The College has a number of outreach programs through N.S.S., D.L.L.E. and W.D.C. to help the students have a social orientation. The college works towards meeting its mission of not only providing quality education and industry Academia collaboration but to inculcate social values and make the students socially sensitive with a high sense of civility.
