Sankalp 2k19 - 15th & 16th February 2019

Date: 15th & 16th February 2019

N.S.S. Unit organized an inter-collegiate social fest "Sankalp-2019" on 15th and 16th Feb 2019 based on the theme ‘Ahavaanatmak’. Sankalp- 2019 aimed to spread the message that, “A child with special needs will inspire you to be a special kind of person”.

Ahavaanatmak aimed to create awareness among the youth about the psycho-social issues and challenges faced by children with intellectual disabilities and also to explore possible solutions to the problem. Intellectual Disability (ID), once called mental retardation is characterized by below–average intelligence or mental ability and a lack of skills necessary for day-to-day living. There are varying degrees of intellectual disability, from mild to profound. Children with Intellectual disabilities have limitations in Intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviors. There are over 20 million mentally retarded people in India of which two million are children, who are facing profound marginalization. Children with mental retardation are facing different psychosocial challenges like Stigma, Discrimination, Isolation, Blame, Shame, Guilt, Frustration, and Inferiority complex, Loneliness, Anger, Stereotypes, and Sadness. Often the child is not mentally retarded but the environment is sometimes so non - stimulating that the subnormal child becomes worse.

Sankalp 2019 was not a prototype intercollegiate event having various competitions. Rather, it was an intercollegiate socio-cultural fest organized to engage the youth in a dialogue on the “Social-Inclusion” of people with Intellectual Disabilities through a panel discussion and information sessions followed by a theme-based Creative performance.
